Cool Coasters

These coasters are a snap to make! Use fabric scraps to make one or two to brighten a table or office space. Or bundle a bunch together with a cheerful ribbon to give as a cute (and handmade) gift.

Fabrics are from the Give Thanks collection by Deb Strain for Moda Fabrics.

Materials for One Coaster:

2—41/2" squares

Finished coaster: 4" square

Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42" of usable fabric width.

Measurements include 1/4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Assemble Coaster:

1. Layer the squares with right sides together (patterns facing in). Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew around three edges; leave the fourth edge open. To turn the corners without stopping, each time you get 1/4" from the end of a seam take your foot off the foot pedal and lift your machine's presser foot, leaving the needle down; turn the fabric 90 degrees, put presser foot back down, and continue sewing.

2. Turn coaster right side out. Fold raw edges under (inside) 1/4".

3. Using a 1/4" seam allowance, topstitch (sew) the open edges together and continue around the other three sides. Use the Step 1 technique to turn each corner.
